How do ya FIX This?Maya Error: Free memory is low. Memory exception thrown

Hi Folks,
I'm working in maya5.01 , i've got a dell4300 with only768 of Ram.My problem is this, my model is 128 megs, i have to open it in a single view otherwise everything freezes up & crashes. with the error: free memory is low . Memory Exception thrown...
Should i increase my Virual Memory?
Please respond, i'm down to the wire on my M.F.A. project.
